Music Could Treat Diabetes We Will Rock You Song By Queen Triggers Cells To Release Insulin!

Diabetes is a disease that many people across the world are battling. But a group of researchers has found something incredibly exciting to treat diabetes. Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at ETH Zurich in Basel uses music to trigger the cells to release insulin within minutes!

Not just that, the research also suggests that “We Will Rock You,” a song by the popular band Queen seem to work well in triggering cells. The research study is published for reference in ‘The Lancet Journalfor Diabetes and Endocrinology. Let’s dive in to learn more about the exciting research and its findings!

Groundbreaking Research

This groundbreaking research is led by Martin Fussenegger. They have made insulin-producing cells receptive to sound waves with a protein from the bacterium E. coli. The protein seems to respond well to mechanical stimuli. Scientists in the study have incorporated a blueprint of ion channels in the bacteria into human insulin-producing cells.

Ion Channels respond well to sound. Therefore, positively charged calcium ions flow into the cell. This causes the reversal in the charge of the cell membranes. The tiny insulin-filled vesicles combine with the cell membrane. Ultimately, insulin is released outside by the vesicles!

Research Findings

According to the study results, volume levels of around 60 decibels (dB) and bass frequencies of 50 hertz seem to trigger ion channels more effectively. Researchers play the music for a minimum of three seconds along with a pause for a maximum of five seconds. This helps the cells to release a maximum level of insulin. Less amount of insulin is released when the intervals are longer than that. How surprising is this?

Researchers also wanted to know what genre of music the cells respond well to. The popular rock song “We Will Rock You” triggered roughly 70% of the insulin response within 5 minutes. All of the insulin was released within just 15 minutes! However, classical music shows a weaker release of insulin.

Our designer cells release insulin only when the sound source with the right sound is played directly on the skin above the implant, says Martin Fussenegger from the Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at ETH Zurich in Basel.

The researchers have made it evident that the concept works. However, the research has not gone through any clinical trials. This groundbreaking research on cell cultures has the potential to unlock many discoveries. It also tells how these proteins can go further in therapeutic use.

Conclusion

Diabetes is a disease that many people across the world are battling. But a group of researchers has found something incredibly exciting to treat diabetes. Department of Biosystems Science and Engineering at ETH Zurich in Basel uses music to trigger the cells to release insulin within minutes. Surprisingly, The popular rock song “We Will Rock You” triggered a high insulin response! This groundbreaking research on cell cultures has the potential to unlock many discoveries.
