Rats drove a mini cybertruck in groundbreaking research highlighted by Netflix

A neuroscientist has invented the idea of teaching rats to drive. This experiment challenges views on animal intelligence and demonstrates neuroplasticity.

Kelly Lambert got the idea while conducting research at the University of Richmond. Through trial and error, Professor John McManus and his team developed an upgraded rat-proof vehicle to conduct further experiments.

The upgraded ROVs have several advanced, unique features, such as customized design, ergonomic driving levers, indestructible tires, and, most importantly, rat-proof wiring. These unique features have provided a high degree of success to the project.

This research helps to study neuroplasticity, behavioral neuroscience, the impact of enriched environments, behavioral concepts, etc.

The process behind rats driving a mini Cybertruck

This study was conducted to understand how creatures can learn complex behaviors and interact with various environments. The research team particularly analyzed the neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to adapt).

The ROVs used for the experiments are integrated with several sensors, which help to detect the rat’s movements and change the navigation or functions. Rats are trained to control the functions of the ROVs, such as interacting with steering wheels.

The rats’ training process was conducted in a safe and fully resourced facility with the necessary conditions. The rats were placed inside the vehicle, ensuring their movements were directly related to their function.

The controlled facility of the vehicle allows the rats to learn the functioning of the vehicle. Generally, the training process improved the active control of the rats.

Why does this experiment matter?

This experiment is a breakthrough in the behavioral analysis of the animals. It also provides insights into the cognitive capabilities of the animals.

Animals’ brains’ ability to detect and form new neural connections through learning has been confirmed through this study.

It is also confirmed that positive reinforcement can encourage and make animals learn new activities.

In conclusion, Kelly Lambert, a neuroscientist has invented the idea of teaching rats to drive, and it’s featured on Netflix. This experiment is both unique and useful because it challenges traditional ideas about animal intelligence and provides evidence of neuroplasticity.
