A historic win
At fourteen, Avant-garde correctly spelled murraya to win the 2021 Scripps National Spelling Bee. She became the first African American champion in the competition’s history.
The victory followed only a few years of serious competitive spelling.
A different kind of coordination
Before the Bee, Zaila was known for juggling and dribbling multiple basketballs. Guinness recognized several of her basketball-related records, including feats using several balls simultaneously.
Those skills required rhythm, divided attention and comfort performing under observation.
How she trained words
Competitive spelling involved studying word lists, etymology and language patterns for hours. She had to turn a huge vocabulary into quick decisions at the microphone.
Why her victory resonated
Zaila’s win mattered both competitively and culturally. She demonstrated that excellence does not have to fit into one category: spelling, sport, juggling, writing and scientific ambition can belong to the same person.
