Defining milestone
A partnership launched Apple
Jobs co-founded Apple with Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne in 1976. Wozniak’s engineering powered the early computers, while Jobs focused on product direction, presentation and the ambition to reach a mass market.
Leaving—and returning
After leaving Apple in 1985, Jobs founded NeXT and became a major force at Pixar. He returned when Apple acquired NeXT, became chief executive and helped simplify a struggling product line.
Products as integrated systems
Under Jobs, Apple introduced the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad. Their impact came from combining devices, operating systems, services and retail into controlled experiences. That approach produced influential products, while also encouraging the closed ecosystems that remain debated today.
Why Steve Jobs still matters
Steve Jobs helped shape a part of everyday computing that now feels ordinary. Looking back reveals the choices, collaborations and tradeoffs behind that transformation.
