The classroom challenge that changed his life
Chillal began growing his nails in 1952 after a teacher punished him for accidentally breaking a long nail. The incident made him wonder whether people understood the discipline required to maintain one.
He stopped trimming the nails on his left hand while keeping his right hand usable for daily tasks.
A record with a physical cost
By 2014, the five nails measured more than nine metres combined. Their weight and curvature affected his hand, damaged nerves and made sleeping difficult. He had to wake frequently to reposition the hand and prevent breakage.
The final cut
In July 2018, after 66 years, the nails were removed with specialized equipment. Rather than discarded, they were preserved for display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in New York.
What his record reveals
Chillal’s achievement is a striking example of long-term commitment, but it also shows that extreme records can reshape the body and everyday life. The measurement is only the visible end of thousands of careful days.
