Rolf Buchholz Built a Record With 516 Body Modifications
German computer specialist Rolf Buchholz holds records for male piercings and body modifications, including implants, tattoos and a split tongue.

Rolf Buchholz was 40 when he began getting tattoos and piercings. Two decades later, the German computer specialist held Guinness World Records titles for male piercings and body modifications.
What counts as a modification?
Guinness verified 516 body modifications in 2012. The total included 481 piercings and 35 other alterations.
His modifications include forehead implants resembling horns, a split tongue, tattooed eyes, subdermal implants and magnetic implants in his fingertips. Tattoos cover much of his body, although Guinness did not count ordinary tattoo coverage in this record.

Rolf Buchholz’s transformation through body art.
Appearance and identity
Buchholz studied computer science and worked in telecommunications. He has emphasized that changing his appearance did not change his personality.
The contrast is central to his public story: dramatic horns and hundreds of piercings coexist with an ordinary professional life. Reactions from strangers say more about assumptions than about who he is.
A long process, not one event
His modifications accumulated across years. Some involved surgery or implantation; others required repeated sessions and careful healing.
Body modification carries risks including infection, nerve damage, allergic reaction, scarring and implant rejection. Buchholz’s record is not a blueprint for unsupervised procedures.
The geek lesson
Buchholz began relatively late and built his appearance incrementally. His transformation demonstrates how identity can be expressed through deliberate, sustained design—while the person beneath the design remains recognizably the same.
