Robert Wadlow grew to 2.72 metres (8 feet 11.1 inches), making him the tallest person for whom there is irrefutable medical evidence. His height brought worldwide fame, but everyday life demanded constant adaptation.

Growth that never stopped

Born in Alton, Illinois, in 1918, Wadlow was an average-sized baby. A hyperactive pituitary gland produced unusually high levels of growth hormone, and he grew rapidly throughout childhood and adulthood.

By age eight, he was taller than his father. At 17, he stood 2.45 metres and became the tallest teenager ever recorded.

Living at an unprecedented height

Clothing, furniture, transport and footwear had to be customized. Wadlow used leg braces and had reduced sensation in his feet, yet he travelled extensively for public appearances and became known for his calm manners.

In 1940, a poorly fitting brace caused an ankle blister that became infected. He died on 15 July at only 22.

More than a measurement

Wadlow’s life is often reduced to a number. The fuller story is about a young man adapting to a body for which the built world had made almost no provision.

His hometown preserves his memory with a life-size statue. More than eight decades later, his verified height remains unmatched.

The geek lesson

Extreme records can hide ordinary human needs. Wadlow’s story invites fascination, but also empathy for the daily engineering, medical care and resilience required to live far outside standard dimensions.
