María José Cristerna is known internationally as the “Vampire Woman,” though she has also preferred “Jaguar Woman.” Behind the dramatic name is a Mexican lawyer, activist, businesswoman and professional tattoo artist.

A record built from many forms

Guinness World Records verified 49 body modifications in 2012, the female record. These include transdermal implants on her forehead, chest and arms; dental modifications; a split tongue; and numerous piercings.

Tattoo coverage is a major part of her appearance, but Guinness’s modification count is based on defined procedures rather than every tattoo.

Art after adversity

Cristerna has connected her transformation with reclaiming control after domestic abuse. Horn-like implants, tattoos and dental work became symbols of strength and ownership of her body.

She operates a tattoo studio and clothing line and has used her visibility to speak about self-expression and violence against women.

She warns others to think carefully

Despite her commitment, Cristerna advises people considering permanent modification to reflect carefully and choose experienced, ethical professionals.

That warning matters. Implants, eye tattooing, tongue splitting and extensive piercing carry medical risks and can be difficult or impossible to reverse.

The geek lesson

Cristerna’s public image is deliberately theatrical, but its meaning is personal. Her body art turned survival, professional skill and self-definition into a visible language—one she controls rather than allowing others to write for her.
