Defining record
The youngest Meijin
Iyama turned professional at 12 and won the prestigious Meijin title in 2009 at age 20, then the youngest champion in the tournament’s history.
Seven crowns at once
In April 2016, victory in the Judan series completed Iyama’s sweep of the Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo, Oza, Tengen, Gosei and Judan titles. He became the first player to possess all seven at the same time.
Repeating the impossible
After losing one crown, Iyama reclaimed the full set in 2017. Holding every major title once required extraordinary range; doing it twice demonstrated sustained preparation across overlapping leagues and title matches. His achievement remains a benchmark for Japanese Go.
Why Iyama Yuta still matters
Iyama Yuta expanded the limits of competitive play through preparation, adaptation and calm decisions under pressure. That example continues to influence both competitors and fans.
