The grandmaster milestone
Gukesh learned chess at seven. On 15 January 2019, he completed the requirements for the grandmaster title at 12 years, 7 months and 17 days, then the second-youngest achievement in history.
His family reorganized life around an international tournament schedule. The result was not simply more study, but repeated experience against contrasting styles under tournament pressure.
From prodigy to contender
Gukesh crossed 2750 in rating as a teenager and won the 2024 Candidates Tournament, becoming the youngest challenger for the classical world title.
Later that year, he defeated Ding Liren to become the youngest undisputed world chess champion.
What his obsession looks like
Elite chess requires opening preparation, calculation, memory and emotional recovery after mistakes. Gukesh became known for deep concentration and willingness to enter complicated positions rather than protecting a prodigy reputation.
Why his story matters
The grandmaster age is impressive, but the later progression matters more. Many young talents reach one milestone; Gukesh continued transforming preparation into results at progressively higher levels.
