Demis Hassabis Took AI From Game-Playing Breakthroughs to Protein Structures
Demis Hassabis changed artificial intelligence with work whose influence still reaches across modern technology.

Demis Hassabis has pursued artificial intelligence as a general problem-solving engine. At DeepMind, that pursuit produced landmark systems in games and biology.

Defining milestone
From games to a research company
A chess prodigy and game designer, Hassabis later studied cognitive neuroscience before co-founding DeepMind in 2010. The company aimed to combine neuroscience and machine learning in systems capable of learning difficult tasks.
AlphaGo changed the benchmark
In 2016, AlphaGo defeated 18-time world champion Lee Sedol 4–1. The match demonstrated how deep neural networks, reinforcement learning and search could master a domain long considered exceptionally resistant to machines.
AlphaFold reached into biology
AlphaFold transformed protein-structure prediction, giving scientists a powerful tool for understanding biology. Hassabis and John Jumper received half of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for this work, while David Baker received the other half.
Why Demis Hassabis still matters
Demis Hassabis changed not just a technology, but the expectations around what technology could do. That influence remains visible in tools, institutions and debates today.
