Cut
Nail care became a way of life
Williams began growing her nails in the early 1990s. As they lengthened, manicures became major projects requiring many hours and multiple bottles of polish. Everyday tasks had to be adapted around the curves of the nails.
Guinness first confirmed her record in 2017. Before the cut in 2021, the nails measured 733.55 centimetres combined.
Why she decided to cut them
Williams said she was ready for a new chapter. The removal took place with an electric rotary tool under professional care. It was both practical and emotional: the nails had shaped her public identity for years.
The record did not disappear
The removed nails were preserved for display at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Her achievement therefore remained visible even as she regained easier use of her hands.
Beyond spectacle
Williams emphasized beauty, self-expression and the right to make personal choices. Growing the nails was her decision; cutting them was too. That autonomy is the most important part of the story.
