Painting before language

Born in Melbourne in 2007 to artist parents, Andre began experimenting with paint at around nine months. Her work used pouring, splashing, found objects and thick layers of colour.

A curator reportedly selected her early paintings without initially knowing the artist’s age.

The exhibition timeline

Andre’s official biography lists her first solo exhibition in Melbourne at age two. Her 2011 New York solo exhibition, The Prodigy of Color, opened when she was four and brought international attention.

Art or novelty?

Public discussion often focused on whether a child could be called a professional artist. That debate sometimes overshadowed the physical qualities of the work: colour, texture, scale, embedded objects and the performance of making it.

Growing beyond the prodigy label

Andre continued exhibiting internationally and expanded into sculpture, sound-paintings and installations. The meaningful story is not that a four-year-old briefly attracted attention, but that the practice continued to evolve.
