Researchers from UC San Diego and the University of Maryland just dropped a bombshell: thousands of satellites are broadcasting unencrypted sensitive data, from T-Mobile calls to US military ship comms and Walmart logistics. Using a simple $800 rooftop satellite dish, they intercepted data across 15% of operational satellites, with one satellite’s reach covering 40% of Earth’s surface!
This three-year study scanned 39 geostationary satellites, revealing a global security crisis.
“Many companies skip encryption due to costs, and some don’t even know their data is vulnerable,” said a lead researcher from UCSD.
Experts are stunned. Cybersecurity analyst Jane Harper called it ‘a wake-up call for critical infrastructure,’ warning that hackers could exploit this on a massive scale.
