Dr. Miao Zhang
Field of Expertise: Observational Seismology
Miao Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Dalhousie University. His research encompasses a wide range of seismic events, including tectonic and volcanic earthquakes, induced earthquakes, and man-made explosions. Zhang’s work focuses on developing advanced seismic monitoring methods, with a particular interest in machine learning applications for earthquake detection and characterization. He is also dedicated to creating open-source software packages for earthquake monitoring and seismic analysis.
Current Research or Discovery
Zhang has been instrumental in integrating deep learning techniques into earthquake early warning (EEW) systems. He co-authored a study titled “Universal Neural Networks for Real-Time Earthquake Early Warning,” which introduces a data recombination method to create generalized earthquakes for neural network training. This approach allows for real-time EEW initiation at the early stages of an earthquake, demonstrating effectiveness across various tectonic settings.
Contributions to Research
Open-Source Software Development: Committed to creating and sharing tools for seismic analysis, contributing to the broader geophysics community.
Earthquake Detection and Location: Developed methods for rapid earthquake association and location, enhancing the speed and accuracy of seismic event detection.
Machine Learning Applications: Pioneered the use of deep learning frameworks in seismology, particularly for real-time earthquake early warning systems.
